Replacing a hydrant head is not a DIY job. Only a qualified professional should undertake this task.

To begin, we turn off the water supply to the hydrant. Then we remove the hydrant head from the standpipe. Next, we pull up and remove the pump rod from within the standpipe and unscrew the old plunger from the end of the rod. We install the new plunger and tighten the screw, replace the pump rod in the standpipe and screw the hydrant head onto the standpipe after applying fresh plumber's tape to the threads before reconnecting the water supply and checking for leaks.
